LPC = Licensed Professional Counselor

The counselor has completed his/her master's degree from an accredited institution, has a minimum of 3,600 hours of actual clinical experience, and has passed a written examination administered by the State of Pennsylvania.  The counselor is then licensed by the state to provide counseling services.  The counselor must show proof of 30 hours of continuing education every two years and have no unresolved disciplinary action in order to maintain his/her license, which is renewable every two years.

MA = Master of Arts degree

This is awarded after successful completion of advanced study after a person has earned his/her bachelor's degree.  This typically involves an additional two years of full-time class work at an accredited institution and often includes additional clinical experience in the chosen field of specialized study.

MSCP = Master of Science in Counseling Psychology

(See MA above.)

NCC = Nationally Certified Counselor

The counselor has met national standards for counseling developed by professionals in the field as opposed to state legislators; this does not qualify an individual for automatic state licensing.  This requires that the individual has graduated from an accredited institution with at least 48 semester hours of graduate coursework, completed 3,000 hours of work as a counselor, has a minimum of 100 hours of face-to-face supervision with a qualified professional, and has passed the National Counselors Examination for Licensure and Certification.
